Fred Ballagh, the youngest of seven siblings, joined the Navy as supply specialist in the 1930s. Originally assigned to the Pacific Fleet, where he became the Fleet’s flyweight boxing champion, he was reassigned to the American Embassy in London in January 1941, where he served until his retirement from the Navy in the 1950s.
